John Irvine is Asia Correspondent for ITV News. He reported from Baghdad throughout the 2003 Iraq conflict. He won two awards for his reports, being named TV journalist of the year by the Royal Television Society and also taking the international news award with the report Welcome to Baghdad.
The judges praised John for his "bravery, quality of writing to picture and his long-term commitment to this story". They said he "has been a contender in previous years because of the consistent quality of his work. But this year he has really come through and from the strongest of fields." |

Before moving to the Asia bureau, he served as Middle East correspondent. Based in Jerusalem, he took on the role in September 2000 after spending nearly five years as ITV News' Ireland correspondent. John was appointed Ireland correspondent in January 1996 after spending eighteen months as producer/reporter at the Ireland Bureau in Belfast. John was born and bred in Belfast. After studying journalism at the College of Business Studies, he began his career in 1983 at The Tyrone Constitution, based in Omagh. After four years with the paper he joined Ulster Television as a reporter in 1987, where he worked for seven years until joining ITV News in 1994. In his career as a television reporter, John has extensively covered all aspects of the Northern Ireland troubles, including the Shankill Road and Enniskillen bombs and the Drumcree marches. John is married to Libby, and they have a daughter, Elizabeth.
